Nature’s Gift: Honey
By Carolyn Root

Here’s to another amazing ingredient for this month! Honey has some awesome
properties, especially for people with sensitive skin. I have to admit, when I
first read about someone using straight honey on their face as a cleanser, my
first thought was “Isn’t that sticky??”. But I tried it and found that it isn’t
at all! Here are some great things about it:
Honey is a humectant, which means it attracts and retains moisture. It also has
antibacterial properties and is an anti-irritant. When used on skin, it helps
clean and soften. Honey helps speed up the process of healing. If you have a
blemish, using a dab of honey covered with a band aid over night to help
eliminate it and prevent scarring. It’s great for burns too! Just take a little
and coat a burn with a nice layer. My burn quit hurting in record time and is
almost gone today, and that’s after getting it yesterday! I’m always burning
myself on something in the kitchen, so I’m thrilled to have a solution to a
painful problem!
Honey contains vitamin B, copper, iron, potassium, and calcium to name a few
wonderful properties. It also has lots of minerals, these varying depending on
where the honey comes from.
Internally, honey can be used for a pain reliever, mixing 3 Tablespoons with a
cup of boiling water (basically honey tea), relieving coughs, soothing sore
throats and can even help with allergies if used in the honey comb form.
Buying raw honey is the best way to get it. The natural enzymes from the bees
haven’t been killed by processing thus providing a lot more nutrients. I will
occasionally mix powdered milk together with honey for a daily cleanser. Love
the results!
